Inspired by a road-trip conversation I had with Kristie this weekend (we traveled to Austin for a half-marathon and that recap should be up soon), she and I have decided to be a little crazy and give up personal shopping/spending for the month of February.
For me, this means no:
- Clothes
- Accessories/shoes
- Unnecessary things for the home
- Dining out solo (Starbucks, quick lunch at Subway, etc.)
This doesn't mean:
- Gifts
- Groceries
- Necessary things for the home
- Dining out with others
That last one -- on both lists -- seems weird, I know, but I have a few scheduled social outings this month that I won't cancel because they're not the issue here. (One is celebrating a friend's birthday, the other is a planned date night out for Valentine's.)
I don't want to give up special nights with the people I care about, but I do want to curb a "quick coffee" or a 1-click book purchase on Amazon. I love my prime membership, but it's dangerous!
Anyway, if you'd like to join us, you should! We'll be hash-tagging our non-shopping adventures with the very original #noshopping.
Who's with us?

I'm in! Good thing I bought my deck umbrella today, eh? I don't tweet though; does the hashtag work for blogs?

I decided to join! I'm buying my new running shoes tomorrow to get them in before the deadline :)

No. But that's because my personality is already like that. I limit myself a lot - I don't really shop. Just lately, I have bought new clothes! For the first time in a very long time! Why stop? Oh, ya, budget! Like I said, it's already my nature.
However, I do like the idea of not buying coffee or a quick snack unless it is a social outing. I think that is brilliant!

Have fun! The eating out thing makes total sense!

OK...makes sense and sounds like something I could do and should do. I am in. Wish me luck!

You have amazon prime! And an iPhone, right? This may be old news to you, but I just found out there is a (free) kindle app for iPhone that allows you to download books from amazon to read on your phone, which you can't do because that would be shopping BUT, with prime membership you can borrow one book a month for free! Totally virtuous book "buying" loophole!

If I wasn't getting married on March 3rd and then leaving for my honeymoon right after, I'd totally be on board. I want the freedom to purchase things for both occasions though.. I will join you for the food/snack/coffee challenge though.
Maybe I'll try the no personal spending on clothes/accessories/etc in April.

What a coincidence, I was already planning to do something like this for February, so I am totally on board! Strength in numbers and all that, right?

Oh, I just did this for January! It's a good reminder of how much money I spend at Target. ;) Good luck!

I'd love to do this, but the idea of spending the last month or so of my pregnancy unable to order any unnecessary baby items from etsy makes me twitchy. But best of luck!! I did something similar for a couple months last year and it worked really well. Also freed up the surprising amount of time I apparently spend online shopping.

I've been toying with the idea since you first tweeted about it...I'm so tempted, I just don't know if I have it together enough for the eating out/snacking part of it! I've been pretty good lately about the other kinds of unnecessary spending (ahem, Target) but the food part always trips me up. On the other hand, it does totally help to know that you're accountable to other people for this kind of stuff, so...I'll do it! EEK!! Guess that means I should get to planning some cooking for tonight, huh?

I'm SO MAD at you that you agreed to do this with me. Next time talk me out of it. The TOMS ballet flats came out TODAY.
